The Eucharist
Is the Eucharist really Jesus?
After the consecration, the whole Christ is truly present under the appearances of bread and wine.
The short answer
Yes. Catholics believe that by the power of the Holy Spirit and Christ's words at Mass, the bread and wine become his Body and Blood. Jesus is present truly, really, and substantially, while the sensible appearances of bread and wine remain.
A closer look
Jesus taught that his flesh is true food and his blood true drink. At the Last Supper he did not say, 'This represents my body.' He said, 'This is my body,' commanded the apostles to do this in his memory, and gave the cup as the new covenant in his blood.
Paul treated receiving the Eucharist as communion in Christ's Body and Blood and warned against receiving unworthily. From the earliest centuries, Christians understood the Eucharist as far more than ordinary bread or a symbol created by the community.

A moment with God
Jesus, Bread of Life, deepen my faith in your presence. Give me reverence, hunger for you, and a heart ready to become what I receive. Amen.
