Solemnity of All Saints
About this artwork
The Sermon on the Mount. A general meditation on listening to Christ’s teaching. This painting depicts the Sermon on the Mount, not necessarily the event in today’s reading.
On All Saints, Jesus calls us to the blessed life of mercy, purity of heart, peace, and faithfulness.
Gospel
Matthew 5:1–12a
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came unto him. And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven.
Official readingsHoliness begins in ordinary love
The saints came from every people and walk of life. Their holiness was God’s gift, received through many ordinary choices: prayer, repentance, patience, and love. We honor them today and ask for their prayers as we follow Christ.
The Beatitudes invite us to trust God rather than measure our lives only by comfort or success. Jesus draws close to the poor in spirit, the grieving, and those who seek justice. He calls us to mercy, a clean heart, and the patient work of making peace.
Choose one small act of holiness today. Offer a kind word, forgive an old hurt, or make time to pray. We walk toward heaven together, supported by the communion of saints.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to live your Beatitudes. Through the prayers of all the saints, help me grow in mercy, peace, and faithful love. Amen.
Which Beatitude can you practice through one small choice today?
