Jesus brings the commandments together in love: love God with your whole being, and love your neighbor as yourself.

Gospel

Matthew 22:34–40

But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together. One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Let love shape the whole day

Jesus does not offer a small corner of life in which to love God. He speaks of heart, soul, and mind: the whole person turned toward the One who gives life. Prayer is part of that response, and so are our attention, decisions, desires, and willingness to be taught. We can bring every part of ourselves into the relationship.

The second commandment belongs beside the first. Love for God takes visible form in the way we treat our neighbors. This love is more than a warm feeling. It may mean listening without interrupting, protecting someone’s dignity, sharing what is needed, or setting a truthful boundary without cruelty. Loving another as ourselves also reminds us that our own dignity is a gift to be cared for.

As you prepare for Mass, resist measuring your faith only by how much you have accomplished. Ask instead where love is inviting you to become more present. Choose one small act that joins prayer to daily life. Offer it quietly, without needing recognition, and ask Jesus to teach you how to begin again when you fall short.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach me to love God with my whole heart, soul, and mind. Open my eyes to my neighbor’s needs and help me care with patience and courage. Let my prayer become love in action. Amen.
