Gospel

Matthew 21:28–32

“But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, ‘Son, go work today in my vineyard.’ He answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind, and went. He came to the second, and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I’m going, sir,’ but he didn’t go. Which of the two did the will of his father?”

They said to him, “The first.”

Jesus said to them, “Most certainly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into God’s Kingdom before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you didn’t even repent afterward, that you might believe him.”

Meditate on the Gospel

The father’s invitation

Son, go work today in my vineyard.

The father invites his sons into work that matters. Imagine standing at the vineyard entrance and hearing that invitation addressed to you.

Where is God inviting you to love through a simple act today?

A heart that turns

Afterward he changed his mind, and went.

The first son’s refusal is not his final answer. He turns back and begins the work. God gives us room to repent and respond with our lives.

Bring one unfinished act of love to God. What first step can you take?

Beyond good intentions

He answered, ‘I’m going, sir,’ but he didn’t go.

The second son’s words sound willing, but his actions do not follow. Jesus gently calls us to an honest faith that becomes service.

Ask for the grace to let one promise become a real act of care.

Let your yes become an act of love

It can be uncomfortable to recognize ourselves in both sons. We sometimes resist what God asks, and sometimes we promise more than we actually do. Jesus invites us to look honestly at the direction of our lives. The first son’s refusal was real, but it was not the end of his story. He could still change his mind and go.

Repentance is more than feeling ashamed. It is turning toward the Father and taking a concrete step. An apology, a neglected responsibility, a moment of patient attention, or a return to prayer can become today’s work in the vineyard. We do not have to wait until our feelings are perfect to begin.

As you prepare for Mass, bring the place where your words and actions have drifted apart. Ask Jesus for the humility to receive correction and the courage to respond. His invitation is still open: go into the vineyard today.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to turn toward you with an honest heart. Forgive my empty promises and give me courage to act with love. May my yes become faithful service today. Amen.

What small act will make my yes to God real today?
