A Canaanite mother persists in faith, and Jesus praises the greatness of her trust.

Gospel

Matthew 15:21–28

Jesus went out from there and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!”

But he answered her not a word.

His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”

But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.”

But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

A faith that will not stop loving

The Canaanite woman approaches as an outsider, but she loves her daughter too fiercely to be turned away. She does not demand control over Jesus. She remains before him with humility, courage, and astonishing trust in the abundance of his mercy. At the end, Jesus does not merely grant her request. He publicly honors her: “Woman, great is your faith!”

This difficult encounter reveals that God’s saving mercy is not confined by the boundaries people create. The woman’s perseverance becomes a model of intercessory prayer, especially when we carry someone we love and heaven seems silent. Silence is not proof that God is absent. We may continue to pray, not because we have earned an answer, but because we know the goodness of the One before whom we kneel. Love keeps returning to Jesus.

Prayer

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us. Strengthen our faith when answers seem delayed, and help us persevere in prayer for those we love. Amen.
